Minister Counselor/Defense Counselor, Royal Danish Embassy
Mr. PETER MICHAEL NIELSEN took up his present position of Defense Counselor, Minister Counselor, at the Embassy of Denmark, in the USA in December 2013.
From September 2006 to December 2013, he served as Deputy Director, Head of Analysis, with the Danish Defence Intelligence Service.
In 1995, Mr. Nielsen joined the Danish Ministry of Defence where he first served as Assistant Deputy Permanent Undersecretary of State for Defence for International Affairs. In 1996, he was appointed Head of Department of the then newly established Department for Nordic and Central and Eastern European Cooperation. In 2001, he took up the position of Defense Counselor at the Danish Permanent Representations to NATO and the EU.
From 1988 to 1995, he served as an advisor to the Danish Commission on Security and Disarmament, an independent advisory body established by the Danish government.
From 1991 to 1996, he also worked as an associate professor in International Relations in the Political Science Department at the University of Copenhagen, lecturing in international security issues.
Mr. Nielsen is the author of several books and articles on European and international security, arms control, and Danish foreign and defense policy.
He holds an MA degree in political science from the University of Copenhagen.
Mr. Nielsen is married to Iben Nielsen. They have three adult children.
